Abstract
Historically, surgical dressings have been always used to preserve the surgical sites, reduce chances of postoperative infections, and promote healing. Tissue manipulation is a part of periodontal surgical procedures. Using periodontal dressings or packs following periodontal surgery has been shown to provide similar advantages. Ever since, dental professionals have employed periodontal packs in a variety of clinical conditions in an attempt to reduce postoperative complications, such as post-surgical swelling, inflammation and bleeding. Various structural modifications have been made throughout the years in order to enhance the mechanical, chemical and medical properties of periodontal dressings. This research aims to review the mechanical and chemical features, biocompatibility, and beneficial effects of periodontal dressings that are currently available.
